The Carlos Reid Gallery

Hervé Perdriel

Paris, France

Hervé Perdriel was born in Paris (France), in 1972. His professional experience in the images and illustration banks gave him a well-advised eye to understand the meaning effects induced by images.

In 2002, he went to Bulgaria to make photographic reports and topics for an illustrating agency. Back in Paris in 2004, inspired by the architecture of the town, he began making numeric photographic collages. Then his first tries for the « Paris » series were born, in which the multiplicity of emblematic places of the city showed their weird reality. Since then, the principles of multiplication and of seriality emerged at the heart of his work and of his researches.


Even if the city remains an important source of inspiration, he now goes beyond a mere visual effect to breathe something more like meaning, depth, intimacy to his images, as it can be seen in one of his last series. In “ Pieces of Identity”, the collected images outline a person, an existence, among memory, remembers and sensations...

Hervé Perdriel’s work is regularly shown in solo or collective exhibitions since 2006. He lives and works in Paris.



Artist’s statement

For Hervé Perdriel, the photography is first and foremost a material, a way to work in a plastic, pictorial manner, closer to a work on images than just a work on photography.
The images, often selected in various banks, are decentred, cropped, cut out, reconstituted; the scales and the shades are modified, the images are juxtaposed. Then he imposes another photographic language whose vocabulary is a painter one: composition, shape, colour, pattern, and also abstraction or narration.

After several series developed around a serial iterative pattern work, Hervé Perdriel gradually gave up with this formal rigidity, to angle his work forward more human and more sensitive pictures. His series “Pieces of identity” is a turning point in his way to consider the image. Since then, his works seem to search an energy, a strength, not only in the city, but also in the living and existential reality of the emotions and of the introspection, as shown in his last double series “A corps ouverts”/”A coeurs perdus”

Serie : "Pieces of Identity"

"Pieces of Identity" works like an “abyss”, a treasure hunt, a puzzle: faces, portraits, stand out bright against a dark background, leading to a double look. Seen from a distance, the portraits are colorful; Seen more closely, the "matter" of which they are made of expresses themselves in a sort of patchwork of photos of various dimensions, in a work of subtle compositions between recurring patterns, colors and sizes.

For each one of them, Hervé Perdriel describes the intimate, the invisible "Identity card" of a person, real or fictional that we see like some elements of visions of an intimacy.
In addition to the colored composite plastic work, a work in-depth on the significant choice of each photography, which is supposed to constitute the identity, the memory, and the history of the person, is made.

We should then look at this photo collage as a story that is told, we try to build some bridges and connections between the shots. What do these images, these landscapes, these objects, these profiles mean for the so painted person? Once involved in the game, we imagine and reconstitute endlessly what may be the intimate lives of these characters, without never, of course, solving the mystery, aware that all these images are but parts of a story that we end ourselves. Hervé Perdriel imagines lives, and lets us free to write the script.

At the same time, these "pieces of identity" dive us into a kind of fascination – a little bit voyeuristic maybe -for these personal stories that we see, feel, hypostases: visions, memories, images from childhood- probably the most significant ones- faces of people once met in a life by accident, keep a part of mystery: who are they and how interpret these images?

Thus presented, in a kind of neutrality in the images, without any comment, the artist invites us to an analysis that will never be anything else but an exciting hermeneutics, like any story...

"Pieces of identity" opens to a new narrative universe in his work, into the thickness of life and intimacy that he gives us piece by piece.
