EDUCATION
1995 MFA, Hunter College, NY
1992 BFA, Chelsea College of Art, London
"This drawing of the fool is taken form a Picasso drawing. I have always loved the image of the Harlequin."
Mary Nicholson
"Inspired by Frances Picabia, whose photographic portraits I have always admired, I used one of his images as a starting point for a painting. In the spirit of Surrealism it is about the dream and trying to make ones dreams come true."
Mary Nicholson
"The title of this painting is taken from a poem by Ezra Pound. The 4 colors create a backdrop over which layers of spray paint (sprayed through fish net stockings) create complex patterns. A thoughtful figure sits in contemplation."
Mary Nicholson
"In this bold painting 2 giant card houses mirror one another. I was working with the idea of flux and change when making this piece. Although they seem ostensibly sturdy this is just an illusion. I was imagining, while painting them, that the cards could collapse at any minute. One moment every seems stable; the next, all is gone."
Mary Nicholson
"A bold diagonal line divides the canvas in which 3 figures share space. Larger than life the central character, in a polka dot body suit, looks down as if contemplating something personal. To her left a different event takes place and to her right another still. Like the characters in Robert Altman's movie, 'Shortcuts', each plays out their existence without the awareness that their universes are intertwined."
Mary Nicholson
