About Tomas Harker
Tomas Harker (b.1990) is a painter from Worksop, UK. Taking inspiration from a variety of sources including philosophical ideas, past and contemporary art and photography, literature, music and film, he creates figurative images often imbued with an archaic style. His work contains many re-occurring themes, with the female figure as a central motif.
“An Arcadian, antiquated world exists within my work. Figures are used like actors playing certain parts and the environment they are in like a stage. Each painting is linked to one another with ideas that are continuing to develop in a similar way to a plot”
Along with a portrayal of a dream-like and self-contained world, Tomas’s work is often an investigation into contrasts and opposites, balancing realistic elements with loosely painted, almost abstracted areas. There is a tension in his work; between the rational and surreal, reality and abstraction, in composition, between colour, or within the narrative.
“I wish to pursue what is mysterious to me, play with the potential of painting, and evoke wonder”

"The aim of my work is to create and capture a particular mood and atmosphere within the painting. Each painting is ambiguous, allowing the viewer to create their own meaning."

"I am interested in what the magpie signifies within english folklore. When painting this work my focus was on achieving an overall balance as well as a sense of movement or transience. Layers of paint were added, smeared, scraped away or re-worked at various stages until I was satisfied with the overall feeling expressed."
Tomas Harker
"I wanted to combine the ethereal figure with a dark atmosphere to create a slightly disconcerting feeling.
I started with a source photograph that inspired and informed this piece. This source was re-interpreted in attempt to achieving an overall balance and capturing a particular mood within the
painting. Attention is given to applying paint in a direct and expressive way.
Painted in oil on 4mm board.
The artwork will be packaged securely in a 2-ply cardboard constructed box with bubble wrap."

"I was inspired by the idea that people who have died still have an influence on our lives in the present. The way their actions in their lifetime can still affect the present and also how the
memory of a person can live on in our minds. And how in darkness, or silence, or in a place of history, we can sometimes feel a presence within the atmosphere. I was trying to capture this sentiment
within this piece.
Painted in oil on canvas and stretched over a frame with a depth of 1.5". The artwork will be packaged securely in a 3-ply cardboard constructed box with bubble wrap."
