Margaret Rose Vendryes

About Margaret Rose Vendryes:

Margaret Rose Vendryes, art historian, artist, and curator, was born in Jamaica and educated in Jamaica and the U.S. She has a doctorate in art history from Princeton University and has built a studio practice on the foundation of a few studio art classes taken while a student at Amherst College. She is currently an Associate Professor of Art History and Fine Arts and Director of the Fine Arts Gallery at York College, City University of New York. Over the past nine years, Vendryes has focused on The African Diva Project a painting series that merges traditional African masks with commercial images of contemporary music icons that craft provocative statements about the representation, agency, and influence of Black women in American culture. Drawing on her life experiences and academic background, Vendryes channels the heart of African aesthetics along with the sensibility of contemporary American culture. Her work uses familiar imagery to explore our complex relationships with beauty, gender, race, and power. Vendryes is known for paintings on canvas and paper with the recent inclusion of actual African masks that create low-relief works engulfed in graffiti inscribed by hand in brilliantly colored expanses of oil mixed with cold wax. Her expansion into hand-painted and inscribed mixed-media serigraphs with the Donnalyn Summeroe Series is an example of what is to come with this innovative concept centered on Black ingenuity and performance.

The African Diva Project Video Interview
Tucker Contemporary Art artist, Margaret Rose Vendryes, is interviewed by Essence magazine Senior Editor Patrik Henry Bass about her iconic painting series, The African Diva Project.

Donnalyn Summeroe Serigraph Series

The verso of her 1976 Four Seasons of Love LP, Donna Summer strikes Marilyn Monroe’s pose from The Seven Year Itch movie posters in 1955. This image is the key to my African Diva Project. I used that utterly provocative, but long forgotten, image of the ultimate African American disco queen as the model for Donnalyn Summeroe a painting that took three years to come to life and then, only once I discovered the West African mask that belonged to her. The African Diva Project: Side A is complete at 331⁄3 square format paintings. While taking stock of this body of work, I realized that the painting I titled Donnalyn Summeroe, that started it all was detached from The African Diva Project.

It is fitting that this work in particular should be celebrated with a series of its own. I designed a “FOREVER” stamp for Donna to echo Marilyn’s 32¢ USPS issue and attached both to the outsider border of each unique screenprint hand-colored with tempera and alkyd paints and inscribed with lyrics to the song for which the work is titled.
