About David Gerena
A New York native, David Gerena learned early on that the way to make change is to progress. His art is an example of this tenant.
The ability to blend two distinct and vastly different styles of art has allowed Gerena’s work to stretch far from the subway.
His handball court mural, “Baby Don’t Do It” is published in Henry Chalfant’s Spraycan Art. It is a testament to the beginnings of graffiti as a social movement and showcases that even early on, Gerena was focused on his art having a message. In the book, Who Shot Ya? Three Decades of Hip-Hop Photography, Genera’s portrait further reinforces that his presence as one of the pioneers of the graffiti art movement.
His graffiti murals under his moniker Kaos have appeared on the ways of the ROXY night club in New York, as well as Club Demerara. Additionally, Gerena’s artwork was showcased in Beat Street, the first major motion picture to examine the ways in which graffiti art changed a generation. ThinkTV/PBS Interviewed Gerena on The Art Show. And most currently, his work was showcased in the Cincinnati Art Museum, where he’s managed to blend his graffiti roots with progressive and transitive style into something that is all together new.
David Gerena – From Subway to Canvas
As a self-taught artist, my earliest tutors were in the form of Marvel comics and animation. I studied form through the movements of The Flash and Fred Flintstone. As a teenager, I discovered spray paint and found my passion in the way color can transform a canvas.
Within my work, large flat planes of color coexist. Two and three-dimensional surfaces help blur the distinction between the shapes and lines I create. My aim with each piece of art is to take the viewer on a story. Sometimes, these stories are overt and easily noticed. Others, I leave parts of my canvases unpainted, adding to the depth and dimension of what I’m saying. It is in this way that the lines of my figurative work are infused with the classic skewed shapes of the graffiti style.
Because I have such a storied and extensive history within the progression of graffiti as a style, my art showcases the ways in which graffiti can transcend from a wall to a canvas. I stretch and splatter paint, allowing the natural dripping of color to split my canvases into something moveable, progressive, and unique.
Just as in life, roots beget progress. Though I have not had formal training within an artistic discipline, I spent my formidable years learning the art of graffiti. As such, I’ve been able to develop and branch out using different techniques that extend the reaches of traditional art. While at times these visions are sometimes distorted, they are at other times pristinely clear. It is always a journey.

"A friend asked I paint "Something Beautiful", while driving and contemplating the painting of the Buddha sketch I've had for over a year I passed a Buddha lawn statue. I knew it was what I should paint. "
