Stefan John Orlowski

Stefan likes to patrol the genres of figurative and landscape painting while exploring themes that are more constant in his practice: contrasts between rougher and more polished styles of painting, formal elements of composition and representing a certain atmosphere, crowding and stillness. He is a fan of Werner Herzog movies and has a tendency to introduce unsettling elements to the bucolic settings surrounding him. He is interested in seeking out bizarre stories and tales and can't resist that which is darker and bordering on the abject. Yet everything still feels very much possible in a practice that can go in many directions. It has long been an idea, or fantasy of his to bring together a personal union between ideas of pastoral landscape and the figure as individual, minor and connected to nature as he is to the textural web of all things living. There is this idea which then runs in opposition to the yearning, at times of pure freedom, to use paint impulsively and free of imagery. It is the reconciliation of these ideas that he finds deeply exciting. These are of course old concerns. They are the concerns of many a modern painter. But it is finding the personal solutions to these ideas, rather than the pre-explored or the fashionable, which is his task. In this sense Stefan's painting could be seen as an art of half constructed roads, dead ends and impulsive acts of joy or dismay in Painting as an act which make for a flawed and human response to painting. The commanding themes that have run through visual art have been Man’s toils with earthly being and the Landscapes in which he resides. Painting is a pool of water. Its depth is unknown, perhaps an inch, with hope an Ocean. It is the tantalising uncertainty of this principle that keeps pulling us back. When one dives into a pool, the initial impulse is not to get to a certain point but to luxuriate in the pool, to revel in its amniotic qualities. Sometimes we want clarity in our images, something definite and undeniably real. But there are times when the mind craves distortion as though through some strange congruence the roots of experience had found their nourishment in opiated soils.
