Biography I was born in 1970 in New York. My artistic journey began early in life within the home. Creativity was always encouraged by my parents as they were artist's themselves. I was often drawing and being creative in some form or another. In my high school years, I started to understand the extraordinary power art would have on my life. Art was a way to escape into my own world, a place where beauty and deep emotions had a voice. After high school, I completed my BFA in 1993 at the Art Center College of Design in California. The central theme of my paintings is the expression of the figure with a focus on the female form using light to reveal the mood or expression I would like to convey. I am constantly evolving and dedicated to creating paintings that remain fresh and speak to the viewer on many levels. My work is shown in galleries, charity events, and has been commissioned by dozens of private and public collectors. Most days I can be found painting in my studio and loving the struggle of life as an artist!

Pittsburgh-based artist Mara Light paints intimate portraits of female figures whose faces and bodies are fragmented by the intervention of hazy shadows, textures, and colors. Featuring moody lighting and somber hues, the realistic forms of the women appear to be in the process of deterioration, worn away by drips and smudges of paint, torn layers of netting, and light scratches that cover the canvas's surface.
These marks of ruin and disfigurement become tools of beauty in the artist's skilled hands. Rather than signs of incompletion or flaws, Light's unique use of texture, light, and color add to the atmospheric quality of the paintings, enhancing the mystery and sensuality behind the figures with downcast eyes and unsmiling lips. The result is an exquisitely moody expression of the female form.
Light, whose parents were both artists, has been drawn to creativity and painting since she was young. She says, "Art was a way to escape into my own world, a place where beauty and deep emotions had a voice. It was easier to paint an emotion rather than speak it."

This painting is a diptych. Each half measures 36x30x2 inches. Two seperate panels that are hung together as one painting. It is an oil painting on linen on panels. There is gold leaf on either side. The subject is pink peonies. Some areas have realism, and other areas are abstracted, with the gold leaf throughout.
The title of this painting is "Descend" . It measures 18x24x1 inches. The surface is oil on linen with added materials between the layers. The subject matter is a portrait of a woman. I would consider this painting Abstract Realism, as there are areas of of both.
