About Mélisa Taylor Metzger
The natural world is the blue-print for my work while allusions to past and contemporary culture inform its development. I build up an aesthetic of duality through the hybridization of divergent approaches to art. In the studio, my practice is labour-intensive as I get involved with materiality and techniques from the realm of traditional painting, craft, design and renovation. Preponderately, I rely on commercial tools such as blow torches and electrical sanders for the making of my paintings, typically human scale. In the tradition of Process art, I seek the presence of external variables such as natural physical properties -heat or friction for instance- to inject unpredictability in my art-making. As I stand witnessing organic processes is the idea of embracing chance and intervening with intuitive timing. In an interplay of randomness, intuition and pastiche, I attempt to build a visual language of formal analogies evocative of the notions of heritage, longing and identity as cyclical and ambiguous entities.
My recent work explores the assimilation of aerosol painting, pyrography and sanding on wood. In the series Turbulences and l'Iris et l'Abreuvoir | in City and in Forest, I investigate the possibilities when arbitrary gestures are set out to coexist with mechanical grid geometry. My interest lies in how our visual perception can be solicited and sustained by an impression of the ethereal derived from complex patterns and repetition. In the resulting imagery, I am suggesting a discoverable lattice of motifs emerging out of defacement and obscuration where allusions to natural phenomena act as allegories for the human experience.
