About Brian “Soigné” Wilson
Brian “Soigné” Wilson is a New York City based visual and performance artist . He attended Columbus College of Art and Design where he studied graphic design , color theory and painting. Brian moved to New York in 1993. He immersed himself in the arty and glamorous 90s New York nightlife scene. He started doing drawings and paintings of nightlife stars (himself included) . He does portraits of beings from an alternate universe he created called Zubenelganubi. He paints them in a pop surrealist style in bold black and white or vibrant colors.Brian has exhibited his art all over New York City. Brian has been flown to Japan to model an Addidas track suit he hand painted . He has appeared on The Ricky Lake TV show where he presented her with a portrait called “Freaky Lake” driving the audience wild. He performs songs in over the top costumes he designs at art happenings and nightclubs . Brian designed the logo for the annual New York drag festival BUSHWIG. He is now engaged in a doodle a day art project in which he does a bold black and white doodle and posts it on social media daily.
Artist Statement
I make art to entertain,educate and enlighten the viewer .I paint nightlife personalities because they are paradigms of fabulousness.I paint creatures that inhabit a universe I created called Zubenelganubi.They are my voice.They laugh ,frolic and dance in my art. They are rarely sad because I think a smile can change the world.They are done in a cartoon style because I think they can reach more people.I usually love bright colors but lately I have been doing black and whites .The extreme contrast of values makes them go POP ! I use synthetic polymer paint because the colors are brighter and because of the quick dry time . I use sumi ink and pastel sometimes because they are such pretty mediums. My art heroes are Keith Haring and Joan Miro .I am doing a series of drawings on Facebook now called doodles. I am doing a doodle a day to keep my creativity flowing and to expand my visual vocabulary. I am blessed to be an artist...
