About Irene van den Bos
The focus in my artwork is on human life, on fragility and mortality.
I choose medium and subject intuitively. As source material I use images and pictures of people’s faces in the media. I am interested in their physicality as well as in their psychology. The way people wear their clothes shows a lot of their personality too. I am therefore very intrigued by people from a different time in history, especially the Dutch Golden Age, because of their rigid and yet rich way of clothing and how they were depicted during that period by our famous painters such as Rembrandt, Vermeer and Terborch.
Despite that I draw and paint what I see and observe, there’s a certain abstraction of the image. I distort the original during a process of deformation and distortion of form. There is a sense of ‘fading away ‘, a vagueness in the image.
I try to show a person’s inner vulnerability. So it’s not about realistic portraits. It’s about a universal sense of decay and mortality.
I work quick and intuitively. I constantly react on my own artwork. I like to study on a subject and let it evolve. I want to explore the tension between abstraction and realism, using different filters to visually distort and disintegrate the face.
