About Isaac Pelepko
Isaac Pelepko is an American painter and draughtsman whose work is
primarily focused on the figure. He received his B.F.A. from the Pennsylvania
College of Art and Design where he was awarded most outstanding student
fine art his senior year and his M.F.A. from the New York Academy of Art
where he received a merit scholarship award. He also studied at Grand Central
Academy and the Art Students League of New York, where He was awarded
the Phyllis and Frank Mason grant for painting and the Gail von der Lippe Merit
Scholarship. Isaac has exhibited in galleries in Paris France, New York City,
and the eastern United states
Artist Statement
I principally have two different bodies of work; one is primarily focused on the figure and is mainly in a realistic style, and the other is narrative and is somewhat more experimental in content and style.
In my work with the figure I am most interested in creating a beautiful piece that refers back to the works of the old masters. The work is meant to provoke an emotional response from the viewer. In many pieces I capture a humanistic quality in the subject that the viewer can feel empathy with. The work is very much about form, structure, light, texture and design as well as creating an interesting layered surface in either graphite or paint.
In the narrative work I explore more intellectual ideas. This work takes on some of the major recurring themes in western art and the human experience, such as religion, romantic love, gender politics, competition, war and violence. Point of view is highly critical and satirical with the human characters behaving with quintessential ugliness, often with no true hero or heroine rising above. The drama is set anywhere from mundane reality to fantastic surrealist dreamscapes.
The compositional and painting styles of the narrative works are highly influenced by western painting including baroque, 19th century French and British; and contemporary influences such as cinema and video games. I use a variety of mediums in order to convey the broad array of moods and atmospheres in the work.
