Artist Staement
I work in a series format using a convergence of color, shape, stroke, line and Emotion. I seek to build something from nothing, and, sometimes, in the process symbols and images reveal themselves. I do not analyze, strategize or conceptualize; rather, I construct and deconstruct until I unravel an abstract “portrait of the moment.” I paint, build, layer, letting the painting happen and follow it. With this, I hope to give the work a presence that will grip rather than release the viewer after a glance. The work should catch the viewer in a web of revealing imagery and emotion. Viewers are dependent on their own perception and experience, thus leaving each with their own idea of what they have seen, felt and thought. Among my most gratifying tasks as a painter is to instigate such interpretation in my audience.
I relate to the thought and process found in the work of Joan Mitchell, Pollock, De Kooning, Kline, and Motherwell: the painting is a record of its making. While a photographer captures single moments on film or digitally, I paint moment on moment until I have all the right moments of raw human emotion captured on canvas. At that point, I see a grid-like abstract depiction of things I have not seen before. I won’t allow myself to transfer image, object, or idea to canvas. I am not interested in borrowing given imagery. I am interested in allowing something to happen, something that had not been happening before, that did not already exist. The work then is intuitively formed, breathing with a presence of its own.
