The piece was done in 1984, in the very early stages of his trajectory in the art world – before his vocabulary became “market-informed”. We consider this work a sort of genius of his oeuvre, one that provides an insight into the poetic vulnerability that lay at the core of his creative impulse.
“Egg” was acquired directly from the artist by art-world power couple, Mary Boone (Mary Boone Gallery) and Michael Werner (Galerie Michael Werner in Cologne, London, Berlin). These two were married at the time and acquired this piece for their personal collection. Both are credited with playing a critical role in the launch of Basquiat’s career, as well as those of other titans of contemporary art history in the 35 years since. Michael Werner was instrumental in the careers of Anselm Kiefer, Georg Baselitz, Markus Lupertz and Sigmar Polke, as well as Jorg Immendorf and Francis Picabia. Michael held the piece in his private collection until 1999. The piece is in impeccable condition.
