About Side
We have a long-term dilemma for we have a short-term body.
The shifting nature of human emotions is like the seaweeds on the bottom of the ocean, floating around according to the different currents passing by. Our love and joy, our betrayal and hates, and many things in between wave within the thoughts and choices we make in our everyday life. One cause for our desire for intimacy is to extend our limited selves. We attempt to know others and to love someone also help to achieve one of the greatest efforts of self-realization.
Maybe there will be/is a world, where everyone can know everyone else intimately. An intimacy that is beyond the body, and into the mind and soul. It would be through every second and minute, through every single cell, every thought, every movement, while with the complete freedom. Then we would really know a lot more about this world we live in.
But as humans in this current world, we can only see this what we call life and others on the side. We shall realize that no matter what our perspective is, it is always limited. But this should also give us hope, as we hope this world is not only just what we can see, full of unpredictability and hurts. Death then must not be the end, since we do not fully know.
Digital space has a certain stability so much more so than the real space we inhabit. Digital space is a realm that exists in-between life and death while it belongs to neither. Digital space can be treated as neutral. You may choose to attach meaning and thoughts to it, but its nature does not necessarily change. In a way, digital space is rather constant, the little piece of eternity that we can encounter in our everyday modern life.
Relating to the discourse of abstraction and representation from the painting tradition, Side employs a rigged and animated female human form to be deconstructed and formed by the computer simulated liquid meshes.

Fu paints her perception of the Sublime in the Techno age in the piece Slant. The digitally simulated monochromatic abstraction and hyper-reflective liquid forms occupy the virtual pictorial space as a triptych, emerging and concealing the shifting human figures within.

About Gorges
Gorges is a three-channel 3D Moving Image piece that contemplates contemporary technological society’s relationship with the natural world. While clouds are synonymous with digital culture, rendered rivers and mountains are realistically depicted stationary with highly saturated color directly from the RGB scale. The naturalistic compositions ties visually to landscape paintings (both Chinese and Western), play on perception and desire for a relationship with nature; yet it is synthetic, a liminal realm that we experience but cannot touch. Gorges offers an experience of the digital sublime, which overlaps with our perception of the digital, landscape, our relationship with each, and the fundamental questions that follow, peering into the nature of our existence.
Sound commission: Daniel Brookman
Project Assistant: Jennifer Muraoka
Gorges as a 3-channel installation is premiered at TRANSFER Download project (curated by Kelani Nicole) in the Art House of Thoma Foundation in Santa Fe on June 15th, 2018, and will be showcased there for a whole year.

Snow Yunxue Fu Artist Talk @ Ox-bow, School of Art and Artist Residency

Artwork by Snow Yunxue Fu

About | Snow Yunxue Fu

Snow Yunxue Fu is a Chinese-born and Chicago-based artist exploring the aesthetic concept of the sublime through a wide range of digital media. Trained formerly as a painter, Fu is known for her elaborate 3D animations that are modeled after the allegorical paintings of Caspar David Friedrich. Fu introduced computer animation to contemporary art at a time when the medium was colored by its mainstream associations with scientific modeling and commercial animation in film.

Her artwork approaches the subject of the Sublime using topographical computer rendered animation and installation. She exams and interprets the world around her through digital space and virtual reality, where she draws a parallel to the realms of multi-dimensionality, the physical, the virtual, and the metaphysical.

Fu has exhibited her work nationally and internationally, including Thoma Foundation Art House in Santa Fe; Venice Architectural Biennial; Current Museum of Art in New York; Hong Kong Arts Center, HK; ISEA 2016, HK; Expo Chicago, US; Digital Culture Center, MX; Kunsthalle Detroit Museum of Contemporary Art, US; NURTUREart Gallery, US; Gallery C Space, CN; West Village Art Gallery, CN; SIMULTAN Festival, RO; 9:16 Film Festival, AU; Spaces Gallery, Cleveland OH; Gene Siskel Film Center, Chicago IL; Supernova Digital Animation Festival, Detroit CO; International Mykonos Multimudia Festival, SOPERNOVA Digital Animation Festival, Denver CO; Greece; Galerie Protégé, NY, and etc. She has presented her work and research in institutions, symposiums, and conferences internationally, and has given artist talks at the Elmhurst Art Museum, US; Chicago Artist Coalition, US; Lido Art Center, CN; Guizhou Minzu (Nationalities) University in Guiyang, CN; Celebrating Women in New Media Symposium at SAIC, US; Trans-National Identity Symposium, US; and Ox-bow School of Art and Artist's Residency, MI, US. Her early painting work, Kissing the Mother, is in the permanent collection of the National Museum of China in 1994, keeping the record of one of the youngest artists in the collection.

Fu teaches at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) in the Film, Video, New Media, and Animation Department, the Continuing Studies Department, and the Ox-bow School of Art and Artist Residency. She also teaches 3D Animation and Game classes at the University of Illinois at Chicago, the North Central College in Naperville IL, and at L-Art University in Shanghai.
