Artist Statement

Included among my abstract works are wall sculptures, paintings, and drawings. I use a variety of traditional and nontraditional materials including: canvas, paper, charcoal, chalk, pen, pencil, oil paint, varnish, plywood, wood, steel, and epoxy resin.

My abstract artworks are informed by Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism. Surrealism in that I give the unconscious/subconscious mind considerable liberty while working. Abstract Expressionism in so much as the pieces are not rooted in, nor do they mirror, objective reality. The artworks exist (for the most part) independent of direct visual reference to the physical world. When a direct reference is made, via a representational image fragment or a material that comes loaded with associations, it is done to induce a sense of memory, of fading or forming thought.

Free from the tethers of objective “subject”, I use color, line, shape, material and composition as “notes” struck in dynamic, gestural ways as well as quietly and reflectively played. These “notes” occupy visual spaces that are emotive and contemplative. Internal, inward-looking spaces.

My large-scale pieces are intended to envelope the viewer and immerse him or her as they experience the work. Through this experience, it is my hope that the viewer may find respite from the noise of the “real” world, a breathing space, a calm found through quite reflection.

About Christopher Brown

Christopher Brown attended the art program at Hartwick College in Oneonta, NY where in 1994 he received his Bachelors of Fine Arts Degree, graduating cum laude and being awarded Departmental Distinction in Art. In 1995 he enrolled in the postgraduate sculpture program at Washington University in St. Louis, MO and in 1997 received his Master of Fine Arts Degree. At university, Christopher developed his interests and skills in wood and metalworking. After graduating, he moved to Atlanta, GA where he worked in metal fabrication studios. With this experience he decided to move back to Connecticut to launch his own business designing and fabricating art furniture. Christopher owned and operated his business until 2009 when he decided to stop designing furniture and focus singularly on art making.

Christopher now works from home where he lives with his wife of 16 years, and three daughters. His art making relies in large part on intuition stemming from a full and practiced creative vocabulary accumulated over many years of education, ‘muscle memory’ from using his hands, and life experience. Tapping into both reason and impulse, Christopher has been working abstractly for the past several years, visually exploring the ‘spaces’ found within thought and emotion.
