About the technique:
all paintings are mixed media, i use found images in media, magazines, www as a starting point, bring them onto the canvas or wood via a phopto transfer technique, could be a collage or single images, big or small and combine that with painterly action of all kinds. oil, acryl, pastels, pencils, markers. the image works as an inspiration and is kind of a sample in hip hip, i use that like a james brown breakbeat and make something new out of it. I immediately react on colors and shapes, alienate, leave something, blur, sharpen, add, erase, and create new context, new grooves, new rhythms, new melodies. I have a very clear imagination of the approximate. I am looking for the space between things, a painting should not be too comfordable - If I immediately know what’s going on, it is getting boring. A painting should wear a mystery in itself

"I want to reach an essence, pureness and authenticity beyond superficial levels of meaning. I have a very clear imagination of the approximate. Working with opposites i mingle abstractions with the tangibility of the visible world. If I know immediately what’s going on, it is getting boring. A painting should wear a mystery in itself“.

Stefan Heyer | About

With his work, Stefan Heyer (b. 1967) set out to explore the vast territory between personal West-German history and post-modern alienation. His style captures the omnipresent myths and lifestyles of a pop-cultural consumer society, and looks for essence and authenticity beyond superficial levels of meaning. Heyer’s picturesque world is shaped by the contrast of strongly expressive and subtle, delicate colors / and this in combination with his nervous, elegant handwriting and the collage-like signature style. He mingles abstractions with the tangibility of the visible world. It is the exposure of deep and collective longing as well as the search for a new beauty in the contradiction of our reality that are of central importance. “I am looking for the space between things - without fearing blankness, silence, contradiction. Structures, motives, words and colors create areas of associations and leave room for individual interpretation.” Stefan Heyer plucks the principle of sampling from the fields of electronic music and Hip Hop, and processes it in paintings. “Societal topics, faces, landscapes, forms, textures, colors, quotes, scraps of conversations, trash, historical facts – 5 out of 1000 pictures samples suit me. I have a very clear imagination of the approximate. I immediately react on colors and shapes, alienate, leave something, blur, sharpen, add, erase, and create new context, new grooves, new rhythms, new melodies.” Under the influence of current societal developments, his works got explicitly more political, tangible, less abstract, and at the same time, more fluent, lighter and penetrable. The style expressive, the world of colors more delicate. Raw, harsh and and powerful – vibrant under the surface, gently carved is the lifeblood into the surfaces of his paintings. “As it is with a good poem: the poetical sound, the lyrical vibe needs to capture the reader. The semantic level can gradually get discovered. Ambiguities are to be tolerated and withstood – it should not be too comfortable. If I immediately know what’s going on, it is getting boring. A painting can keep a mystery. Text Jan Müller Wiefel (GudbergNerger)

Education:

I have been working as a creative and art director for various street fashion and culture businesses in Germany. Growing up in the 80s, I come from a DIY background and became a self-taught painter. It is since 1993 that I have been developing my personal style, and in 2004 I finally took the decision to quit my full-time job to dedicate myself entirely to art.
