About Jani Rattya

Jani Rättyä was born in Nivala, Finland 1973. He studied at Finnish Academy of Fine Arts, Turku Arts Academy and The Liminka School of Arts. Currently he is living and working in Turku. In his art he is focusing on sculpture and painting.

In his sculptural works he has been exploring man's relationship with his environment and man's spiritual spaces through installation and imagery that is close to pop art. In his later public works he has taken more subtle approach his sculpture becoming abstract. He uses industrial and organic forms and materials.

He is interested in sculptural projects concerning public spaces in urban setting. His multilayered work often approaches the qualities and phenomena of the local community. The spirit of his works is light yet touching deeper issues of humanity.

Jani Rättyä's paintings have been described as luminous, vivid and oddly communicative. The influence of abstract expressionism is noticeable and his work emphasizes spontaneous and subconscious creation. He has explored different techniques to develop his artistic language.

In his paintings frenzied brushwork is intertwined with semi-representative elements. Ethereal gradient backgrounds are smothered with spastic, violent jerks and partly accidental marks. Often his compositions insinuate landscapes or spaces with ambiguous figures.

The essential aspect of his paintings is the balance between safety and uncertainty. He avoids the obvious and looks for the unexpected factor wanting to retain a sense of rawness and continual transformation. Not trusting his skills he often paints over parts or all of his work changing its direction and creating layers which gives the process a more important role. Messy and chaotic action implies confusion and the unpredictable quality of the mind.

His palette is luscious often relishing tinges of pink and the vibrance of brilliant hues against neutral bases. Fluctuating dominance between murky and bright tones creates drama which is animated by the turbulent movement.  www.janirattya.com
