About Gretchen Helt
Gretchen Helt's work is largely dependent on the fundamentals of form, color and composition. Colors and textures play off each other creating complex landscapes that are calm and scenic with unbridled energy breaking through. Helt describes herself as an opportunist when it comes to mediums and materials, but acrylic on wood is her first choice. Her art explores the artist's communion with physical movement expressed through wide gestural brushstrokes, which create a dialogue of balanced action painting with the sublime
"The beginning of each piece starts out very spontaneous with an erratic pattern of applying paint, followed by sanding or scraping through the layers. Each layer is important in the overall vision as a dialogue is created with the painting, and it starts to show me what needs to be done. The process of applying and mixing paint directly on the panel and then “scraped” away continues until a solution is found. Being in the studio is a very freeing thing for me. At it’s core, art, in whatever form that takes, has a role of expanding what life is all about and the beauty in life. We can always use more of that. The artist has the privilege of living in beauty."
Celebrated artist Gretchen Helt has been collected in the Venice, CA community for over 10 years and is held in many private collections around the country.
Helt did most of her growing up in Phoenix, Arizona, where she began drawing and painting as a child. It wasn’t until later in life after moving to Northern California, that she pursued acting, which secured a scholarship and landed her in Los Angeles to study theatre.
More at peace with drawing and painting, it soon took over her thespian ambitions. She then moved to Venice, CA, and was thus inspired by urban city life, graffiti, and erosion.
A self-taught artist whose use of color is marked by action and beauty, these complex landscapes are calm and scenic with unbridled energy breaking through.
