Sometimes You Don’t See (2011)           Linoleum, Steel Tube

With this sculptural installation, my intention and concept is to express the instability of our current times. We live in a time of instability  on many levels - have seen dramatic climate disasters, wars, terrorism, financial uncertainty.  This has had a global and a domestic impact - this instability and uncertainty means that there is less that can be relied on. I wanted to express my recognition that for some the impact of uncertainty puts pressure on families and relationships. Life can change, what you think is real (wood) can turn out to be fake, cuts can appear - some cuts heal, some cuts leave scars that will never heal.

I chose to use linoleum for it’s connection to the domestic and because it is recognisably connected to the floor which one expects to be stable. I have sculpted the linoleum by cutting. The linoleum is deliberately sculpted to contrast with the expected stability of a floor as an expression of the unsettled and of turmoil. My intention is to create the sculpture made out of a ‘fluid’ floor - undulating and cut to change the consistency of the material so that it can be manipulated and sculpted. This work eludes to how people sometimes outwardly cope whilst their world is in turmoil. The fight for survival that can be focused on creativity and  renewal to inspire.

Interview with David Booth

About David Booth

Booth is a sculptor and painter. He enjoys the creative process and, in recognition of this, deliberately selects processes which require him to make  decisions intuitively and instinctively, trusting, evaluating, disrupting, destroying and constructing. This immersive process consciously and unconsciously absorbs Booth during the creation of the work. Producing the aesthetic of organic movement, fluidity, repetition, layers. Booth exploits the philosophy of emergence in the way complex systems and patterns arise out of a multiplicity of relatively simple interactions; exploiting organic variance within an overall apparent repetition, selecting and discarding chance driven elements using wayward systems to create and challenge the work to emerge.

For Booth this keeps his personal practice vibrant, he thrives on producing a challenging response to material, space and context. Drawn towards repetition and multiples, creating movement and momentum. Booth draws on references to growth, journey, escape, time, combining with his transformative use of material also to reference re-invention, often exploiting the natural association of his chosen material to strengthen the context of the work.

Artist Statement:

My work is associated with phenomenology, exploring and expressing feelings. Phenomenology includes any object, situation, experience or event that a person can see, touch, feel, know, understand, or live through. This informs how I choose to explore - inspired by material, process, subject, space, story. I am interested in providing a visual aesthetic and context within the work - with the deliberate choice of materials and process - that will engage the viewer to find an empathetic response. I draw on references to growth, journey, escape, time, and with transformative use of material also reference re-invention, often exploiting the natural association of a chosen material to strengthen the context of the work.

I am drawn to aesthetics of movement, fluidity, repetition, layers. Using the philosophy of emergence in the way complex systems and patterns arise out of a multiplicity of relatively simple interactions; exploiting organic variance within an overall apparent repetition, selecting and discarding chance driven elements using wayward systems to create the whole.

The diversity of working as both a painter and sculptor feeds my creativity and ensures that I am able to constantly challenge myself, and it is this that I use to strive to produce work with an original voice.
